Since we pursuit goals improving the life of every citizen living in cities we decided to request the status of foundation. Legally, this means that investing in projects or providing donations does not only improves your CSR status, it is also tax-deductable. Having an ANBI status requires insights in specific information, this can be found below.

From 2019 onwards the foundation will solely focus on the accelerating planning, development and implementation of sustainable urban green. The previous focus on sustainability related aspects such as energy, waste and logistics are thus left behind.

Accelerate planning of sustainable urban green

Green City Buzz wants to make planning for large scale, high quality greenery a standard part of the initial phases of a development process for both urban areas and private developments. Accurate planning translates into reduced project risk: Green City Buzz raises awareness on the quality of durable green by bringing together and informing public and private stakeholders on choices related to project sustainability. Currently, the planning for urban greenery is either done by municipalities on a small budget or added on the design in the last phase of a private development project (which are often not even realized). By agenda setting and giving voice to a new set of planning practices, focussing on the core of the process, GCB envisions to have a large impact on how urban greenery is thought about. 


Accelerate development of sustainable urban green

Green City Buzz believes in the qualitative difference of urban greenery, with its “365-days green” approach, which is often overlooked by green solutions providers. Not all stakeholders involved in the development are informed or have access to the scientific knowledge necessary to guarantee results of aesthetically pleasing, durable and ecologically qualitative greenery. Green City Buzz foundation ensures those results through sponsored  scientific research, information provision and stakeholder management before, during and after project implementation, improving existing and future urban vegetation ensuring investments in green are cost-efficient and green-effective.


Accelerate implementation of sustainable urban green

From implementation experience (Baxter Building, Secret Village), the foundation is conscious of  the complexities of realizing urban green in public, private and mixed use spaces. Overcoming current obstacles and learning from past inefficiencies is necessary for the implementation of urban greenery. GCB reviews and maps encountered challenges for implementation, advise stakeholders on how to deal with this and influence processes and regulation were necessary.   


On urban green:

The definition of urban green spaces which is agreed on by ecologists, economists, social scientists and planners is public and private open spaces in urban areas, primarily covered by vegetation, which are directly (e.g. active or passive recreation) or indirectly (e.g. positive influence on the urban environment) available for the users. Green City Buzz has a special focus on green in, on and next to buildings and infrastructures given this is a relatively underexposed form of vegetation. 



Nowadays, the media and many others link sustainability to a change in the way we organized or energy, transport and so on. Besides that, it appears that everything that looks green, such as vegetation, is perceived sustainable while this is not necessarily the case. GCB interprets sustainability as a perfect balance between the social, the environmental and the economical. The foundation makes a clear distinction between greenery and sustainable (good) greenery. Sustainable greenery that


  • has a direct and indirect positive influence on the urban environment 365 days a year which creates a valuable proposition and therefore activates stakeholders from the private sector.

  • is durable and resistant to increasingly variable weather conditions and contributes to making the urban environment more resilient for the consequences of climate change.

  • is maintained by local experts which function as key figures in the neighborhood and, therefore, enhance social cohesion in streets and neighborhoods.


As of the second quarter of 2019, Green City Buzz focuses on three pillars to share the vision and secure the foundations long term survival. Firstly, we guide accurate green planning in early conceptual and subsequent phases for reduced project risk and improved results. Secondly, we encourage better quality urban greenery, with a “365-days green” approach through pilot projects and development. Thirdly, We highlight implementation challenges to stakeholders, advise on how to address them, and influence processes and regulation.


365-days interesting green

Due to a gift of the NME funds of the municipality of Amsterdam and in collaboration with the company Green Value Creation, we use the XL border of the Baxter Building (part of the Knowledge Mile Park) as an example of sustainable urban green with a large aesthetic value. Every week, this spectacular border is photographed to communicate this to a variety of different actors through mailings, conferences, the website and social media.



We work structurally together with BRO as a knowledge partner for the Knowledge Mile Park and other projects. Both in public space and greenery in the build environment. Moreover, we will share our knowledge together with the foundation of BRO; Platform binnenstad management through a webinar for urban managers in many different cities.


Green Facades

From september onwards the foundation will be focussing more on vertical greenery by providing an internship to a master student from Wageningen University & Research with an expertise in this form of greenery. Combining and making the available research more understandable will be one of his priorities. Moreover, the student will focus on the current obstacles present for greenery. 


Cash flow

Besides a cash flow as a result of advice and projects we are investigating how we can apply for subsidies or donations to create some large scale examples.



Due to the identity of the foundation, for which multiple people are working, and the advice of Norton Rose Fullbirght, we chose  to work with one director and a supervisory board. The foundations director is Tanja van der Knoop. The supervisory board consists of Jan-Paul Holla (aftredend), Chris Zanders (Voorzitter) en Chris Zanders. 


Remuneration Policy

The supervisory board and advisors all work on voluntary base. The director does not receive compensation for the management activities at the moment.

Summary 2018

The year 2018 was a turbulent year for the foundation. Secret Village was successfully completed. We are very proud that we have shown the feasibility, possibilities and added value of making the street more sustainable in a holistic way. Unfortunately, the impact we hoped to have on existing rules, regulation and processes was minimal but we continue to commit ourselves to this cause.  


The follow-up project “Green green space”, aiming to make an area climate neutral, was initiated to make a big change on an existing iconic urban area. Unfortunately, after putting in a lot of work we found a lack of support from the side of the municipality and the project was ended. Due to this event we decided to focus solely on sustainable greening of cities in cooperation with knowledge institutes and other experienced actors. 


With help from a donation from Redevco Foundation we were able to contribute to delivering the concept of ‘duurzame tentoonstelling’, in cooperation with VenhoevenCS. The donation is solely spend on labour hours to mastermind the concept.
